Red light therapy has moved from the research setting into everyday life for good reason. It can be a gentle yet powerful way to support cellular energy, tissue repair, and overall resilience. In our practice, red light therapy is an excellent tool to support healing, recovery, and nervous system balance. Lumebox is the system we trust and recommend to our patients, as well as personally use at home.
What Is Red Light Therapy?
Red light therapy, or RLT, uses specific wavelengths of visible red and near infrared light to stimulate cellular function. These wavelengths penetrate the skin and underlying tissues and interact with the mitochondria, the energy centers of our cells.
Mitochondria are responsible for producing ATP, the molecule that powers nearly every cellular process in the body. When mitochondria function more efficiently, tissues repair more effectively, inflammation is better regulated, and the body is more resilient to stress.
Importantly, red and near infrared light do not damage the skin and do not carry the risks associated with ultraviolet light. When used appropriately, red light therapy is safe for regular use.
How Red Light Therapy Works at the Cellular Level
Red and near infrared light are absorbed by chromophores within the mitochondria, particularly cytochrome c oxidase. This interaction can lead to:
Increased ATP production
Improved mitochondrial efficiency
Reduced oxidative stress
Improved blood flow and circulation
Support for normal inflammatory signaling
Enhanced cellular repair and regeneration
Potential Benefits of Red Light Therapy
With consistent use, red light therapy may support:
Skin healthImproved skin tone and texture, support for collagen production, reduction in fine lines, and improved healing of scars or sun damaged skin.
Muscle and joint comfortSupport for muscle recovery after exercise, reduced stiffness, and joint discomfort.
Recovery and physical performanceEnhanced recovery from workouts and physical strain, particularly when used regularly.
Inflammation supportSupport for healthy inflammatory responses in both acute and chronic conditions.
Sleep and nervous system regulationRed light exposure does not suppress melatonin and may support circadian rhythm and sleep quality, especially when used in the evening.
Thyroid healthSome studies have shown improvements in thyroid function with regular use of RLT to the thyroid area, particularly for autoimmune thyroiditis or Hashimoto’s.
General energy and wellbeingMany patients report improved overall energy and a calming effect with regular use.
Conditions Red Light Therapy May Help Support
Red light therapy is not a treatment for disease, but it may be supportive for individuals dealing with:
Joint discomfort and arthritis, tendon or ligament strains
Muscle soreness or slow recovery, post injury or post exercise recovery
Autoimmune disorders
Back or neck discomfort
Skin aging or sun damage
Chronic inflammation related discomfort
Our Recommended Lumebox Protocol
Lumebox cycles are designed to deliver an effective dose in a short period of time.
General wellness and recovery protocol
Session length: 12 minutes
Frequency: Once daily
Distance: Follow Lumebox manufacturer guidelines for positioning, but generally 0.5 inches to 6 inches depending on treatment area
Clothing: Minimal clothing over the treatment area for optimal light exposure
Targeted use
Position the panel to focus on the area of concern such as face, joints, muscles, or the lower back
Maintain consistent daily use for best results
Most patients notice benefits after just a few sessions, increasing with regular use
Consistency is more important than intensity. Daily exposure at the appropriate dose tends to produce better outcomes than sporadic or overly long sessions.
Why We Trust Lumebox
Not all red light devices are created equal. In a clinical setting, accuracy, safety, and reliability matter. Lumebox meets our standards in several key areas:
Clinically relevant wavelengths
Lumebox delivers red (specifically 660nm) and near infrared (specifically 850nm) wavelengths that are well supported in the research for both superficial and deeper tissue effects.
Portable device for any area of the body
The versatility of this device is unmatched - you can use Lumebox for aesthetic reasons for your face and for wellness and physical health anywhere else!
Safety, quality and ease of use
Lumebox devices are well built and designed for regular use. There is no UV exposure, and the device is simple to use with predictable session timing.
Alignment with our philosophy
We appreciate the research and medical validation of this particular product. Lumebox fits well within an integrative and functional medicine framework for comprehensive holistic health.
